Negotiated Learning Hits Hazen

This year we've taken on the exciting challenge to offer negotiated learning for all Hazen Middle School students as part of Act 77.

We're currently in the process of working out our House themes. This process has been taking place during PLP time in groups in both Houses. Students have made questions about the world, and themselves, and worked on finding commonalities within the group. Then they worked really hard to connect their questions with core classes, and develop project ideas that will help either themselves, their community, or the environment.

Several ideas have already come up that will be a great help to our Hazen community like fundraising, reaching out to the food shelf, and growing food for the school.

To help us along with the complicated, and student led process we've spent time doing Google Hangouts with a teacher, and students from The Edge Academy in Essex. The Edge have been using this model for 10 years so they are a wealth of knowledge for what might work. 8th graders from The Edge have presented their theme posters and answered questions from our students about the process. It's been nice to see our students interact with a group from another school. Once we have our theme and project ideas we'll share another update!
